LEWISTON – The U.S. Forest Service has told the Idaho Department of Transportation it can’t support an application for a massive shipment to move on U.S. Highway 12 across North Idaho and into Montana. The Lewiston Tribune reported in a story on Saturday that Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest Supervisor Rick Brazell sent a letter to ITD Chief Deputy Scott Stokes informing him of the federal agency’s decision.

The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation will celebrate the opening of a $50 million salmon hatchery today on the Columbia River. The Chief Joseph Hatchery will raise chinook salmon for sport fishing and for consumption by tribal members. In response, the three branches of state government in Idaho – the governor, the Supreme Court and the Legislature – are coming together to launch an intensive effort to find out what’s going wrong and fix it. The effort will be aided by the Pew Charitable Trusts, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance and the Council of State Governments’ Justice Center.
